Why Did We Create The Rhodium Hackathon?
In 2012, we held the first event that would ultimately become Rhodium weekend. However, we’ve always wanted to do a more “hands on” event to help solve one of the biggest problems we see with online businesses.
You see, over the last 5 years we’ve considered purchasing hundreds of online businesses. In order to evaluate that many deals, we’ve built painstakingly detailed systems around analyzing sites. We’re talking hundreds of data points taken in context with each other and with other similar deals. This analysis paints a very clear picture of how attractive the future of an online business is and if the asking price makes the deal a steal or a dud.
Now, beyond the obvious scams and sites that were clearly sinking ships, we began to notice an unexpected flaw in these sites. Almost every website we looked at was being unintentionally restricted and impeded from its full potential by the current owner.
Without the experience of analyzing hundreds of similar sites and seeing what worked for those sites and what didn’t, we probably would have been blind to the potential as well.
There is gold sitting right there at the surface of almost every site.
It is just waiting to be mined but it often overlooked. In other words, most websites we’ve looked at acquiring are under-monetized.
This became the secret sauce in our acquisitions. In many cases, we could simply pick up that site’s “gold” in a matter of a couple of days of focused work on improving the revenue generated from the existing traffic.
Sometimes it was a simple as one big change, but more often it was a combination of several small changes to the key leverage points in that online business. Those small changes combined together made a big upward improvement to the site’s revenue. It’s simply knowing where to focus your efforts to maximize what’s already there that makes all the difference.
It’s this 80/20 monetization analysis that’s key to being able to consistently double or more the revenue of an online business.
There’s nothing worse than owning an asset with a “clog in the cash-flow pipe” simply due to lack of knowledge. So, how do you learn to remove those blocks?

30 Days Prior to the Event
You’ll submit your “intake form,” sign a non-disclosure and non-solicit form, and optionally share read-only access to your Google Analytics. Chris will run your online business through his proprietary system to identify where your website is under-monetized and identify opportunities for improvement. He’ll prepare a printed report which will be delivered to you on the first day of the event.
Two Weeks Before the Event
You’ll be added to a private Facebook group exclusively for event attendees and experts at the event. You will be able to begin getting to know each other and sharing about areas you might need help and how you can help others. This will also serve as the official place to go for support and updates before and during the event.
Day of the Event
We’ll have a few pre-event activities planned for Friday if you’re coming in early and would like to meet up with others. Transportation will be provided from the two recommended hotels to the event venue.
Day 1 - April 10th
We have to keep a few secrets about the event to keep the element of surprise at our disposal, but here’s a high level overview of what to expect.
5:30 PM – 6:00 PM: Registration
You’ll have a little time to have a drink, network, tour the event venue and get comfortable.
6:00 – 7:00: Opening Presentation By Chris & David
We’ll be starting promptly at 6:00. Chris & David will break the ice and setup the rules (including non-disclosure) for the weekend. You’ll find out what kind of prizes you’ll be “playing” for and set expectations for the weekend.
7:00 – 8:00: Online Business Presentations
Each attendee will share a timed 3 minute overview of their online business. You’ll share what value your business provides, what’s working well for you, and what challenges you’re facing to grow it. Then, you’ll have about 15 minutes to decide if you’d like to work on your own online business for the weekend or join up to work with a partner.
8:00 – 9:00: Monetization Analysis
Chris & David will hand out the pre-prepared, printed monetization analysis. You’ll begin gathering key metrics that will be used to identify opportunities and measure your results for judging on Sunday.
9:00: The 36 Hour Clock Starts. Venue Closes.
We’ll transport everyone back to their hotels and you can either choose to start working or network. Either way, get rested up for a “marathon” day Saturday.
Day 2 - April 11th
9:00 AM – 9:15 AM: Venue Opens
Get ready to have some fun working together!
9:15 – 10:00: Meet the Experts
We’ll have our experts share their stories and introduce themselves. You’ll have about 15 minutes to pre-schedule one-on-one time with any of the experts during working times through the rest of the day.
10:00 – Noon: Working Time. Experts On Site.
We’ll provide the work spaces, the internet, the power, and the experts. You’ll bring a laptop and anything else you need to do work on your business.
Noon – 1:00 PM: Lunch at Venue With Round-Table Discussions
This will be a working lunch and your chance to help other attendees. We’ll group everyone up into small groups so you can mastermind and brainstorm ways to improve each other’s sites.
1:00 – 4:00: Working Time. Experts On Site.
You’ll have a few work spaces to choose from and experts will be around to help.
4:00 – 5:00: Group Sharing.
Everyone will come together to share their progress and any roadblocks they are facing. We’ll begin building a comprehensive list of the strategies and tactics that are working for people. This list will grow and be provided to everyone after the event.
5:00 – 6:00: Dinner Break.
Stop working. Give your brain a rest. Enjoy a meal together and make some new friends.
6:00 – 9:00: Networking and Working Time.
We’ll be facilitating some networking activities in conjunction with working time. We’ll make sure everyone has had a chance to help and be helped by everyone else.
9:00 PM: Venue Closes.
This was probably a pretty exhausting day for you, so enjoy some time decompressing with your new friends and get some sleep.
Day 3 - April 12th
9:00 AM – 9:30 AM: 36 Hour Clock Stops. Venue Opens.
Hopefully all your work has been completed by now, because it’s time to show your results. You’ll have a few minutes to update your metrics and outline the results you got over the weekend in preparation for your presentation.
9:30 – 10:30: Individual Presentations.
Each person will have a timed 10 minute opportunity to share their results from the weekend. Again, we’ll be keeping track of all the strategies and tactics on a big list of results for everyone to see and receive after the event.
10:30 – 11:00: Awards.
Chris & David will determine the winners and present prizes.
11:00 – Noon: Optional Networking.

Noon: Venue closes.

Post Event Findings
7 Days After the Event
You’ll submit your “exit survey” so you can update us on the metric and revenue improvements that have resulted from your efforts at the Hackathon. The big list of strategies and tactics and the results from the exit survey will be combined into an exclusive report for everyone.
With this exclusive report, you’ll have a new “menu” of proven strategies you’ll be able to choose from to grow any online business in the future.

Is there a guarantee?
Yes. It’s pretty simple. If you show up and aren’t 100% satisfied at the end of the event, just let Chris know in person before you leave and we’ll refund all your money.
I don't want to reveal private information about my business, should I still come?
We will do everything possible to create an atmosphere of integrity and trust at the event. In this spirit, everyone is required to sign a non-disclosure and non-solicit agreement before attending the event. However, we recognize that’s not always enough to put your mind at ease.
People coming to this event are there to give help as well as get help. If you’d prefer to simply come to give help, network and learn, the event can still be valuable for you.
You’ll get the chance to look under the hood of successful online businesses and see what really works. Then, sit next to the owner and brainstorm ideas on how to grow it. Not only that, you’ll be able to use your skills to make a big impact on the business and have the resources of programmers, designers, and copywriters in the same room to implement your ideas.
I don't have an online business. Should I attend?
If you don’t yet have an established online business, you have a few options:
- Purchase the Mentorship package which includes the purchase of an online business.
- Find a client whose business you can work on during the Hackathon.
- Join up with one of the other online business owners at the event and help them.
I can't afford a ticket. How can I come for free?
If you’re a skilled programmer, designer, or copywriter with a portfolio you can show and are willing to volunteer to spend a Saturday making some new friends and hacking away to see how big you can help a website get, your ticket is on us! If you feel you can help in some other way, let us know.

How many people will be at the event?
In order for our experts to have enough time to work with everyone, we’re limiting the event to 15 attendees. So, at its peak, the Hackathon will have around 20-30 people. That’s just big enough to keep things interesting, but small enough that you’ll be able to connect with everyone there.
How much time will I get with experts?
At least an hour per expert, but you’ll need to schedule it. If an expert is not currently scheduled, you’re welcome to grab them for help or just hang out and chat with them.
Will there be awards? What can I win?
Yes, there will be awards for the people who achieve the greatest results at the event. The judging criteria and prizes up for grabs will be explained on the first night of the event so you’ll know exactly what’s expected in order to win.
Awards will be given on Sunday morning of the event.
Can I work on more than one online business?
You are welcome to work on more than one online business. However, 36 hours isn’t a lot of time to get maximum results on more than one. Time with experts is limited so we recommend focusing on the online business that has the most growth potential.
